Research Focus

We are interested in mammalian mRNA splicing, in particular in the regulation of alternative splicing. We have uncovered the role of CA-repeat and CA-rich sequences as novel intronic regulatory elements. These RNA elements are very widespread in the human genome, and we have demonstrated for several human genes, that CA RNA elements can function either as splicing enhancers or silencers, regulating the efficiency of the reaction or the splice site choice (alternative splicing). Heterogeneous nuclear RNA-binding protein (hnRNP) L binds to these elements and likely acts as a global regulator of alternative splicing.
